Onyx Storm

Whew, boy!

This 527-page book took me for a ride! Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros is an adult romantacy book with dragons and powers and political intrigue.

The first half of this book didn’t feel like the first two tone-wise. It almost felt like someone had taken over the author and forced her to write this. The joy was missing.

I’m not saying that the series, so far at least, is full of laughs, but there were little moments of mirth and genuine happiness between the characters, and I didn’t see that for the first long while. The halfway point is where the joy comes back, but it’s short-lived because the twist at the end of the second book takes the story on a very dark path.

I wished there was more political intrigue and more mirth from the author. That being said, the second half makes up for the shortcomings of the first half, elevating this to 5 Stars, but only if I round up.

I’m not sure how the author will write herself out of the corner she put herself in, but I’m looking forward to book four.
